Valentine Arts, Crafts and Activity Ideas

Be-Mine Hanger
You will need:
A paper towel or toilet paper tube
White wrapping paper
Tissue paper in pink or red
And curling ribbon on Pink, red, white and silver Satin Ribbon in Red or Pink
Wrap the tube with the white wrapping paper, and apply sticker letters(or write) Be Mine (or any valentine message) on the tube. Punch a hole on the top and bottom of each side of the tube and tie the curling ribbon in the holes...make long so it drapes and is really curly this is what makes it neat I think. Push the satin ribbon through the tube and tie the ends together to form a "hanger" and tie a pretty bow on top. Then warp little goodies (if you want) in tissue paper and stuff them inside the tube with the tissue paper flowing outside of the tube.

Sponge Heart Prints

Encourage children to hop, skip, jump, or tiptoe on a line of hearts or a heart shape taped onto the floor or drawn outside.

Science Activities
Colorful Carnations
Materials: Three fresh white carnations, warm water, knife, food coloring.
Talk to the children about last valentines day (or a long time ago) and the present of white carnations you received. They were beautiful flowers, but you had wished for some red flowers, not white. "At the time I didn't know what to do, so I kept the white flowers and gave them plenty of fresh air, and new water every day. Nothing happened except the flowers got old and died. This year I found a way for the flowers to change color. Should we try it?"
First give the flowers a new cut on the side. Then fill the vase with warm water and food coloring. Put the flowers in the water and wait. (Try with different colors and wait for the colors to creep up into the flower).

DIFFERENT HEARTS
Find picture of a real heart and a play one... tell about the differences. Have them take turns listening to each others heart with their ears to each other's chest. Discuss the heart. What it does in our bodies, where it is, etc.

Mix red and white paint to make pink or red food coloring and white frosting to make pink frosting. Then eat!

VALENTINE GAMES and Group Activities

"I Took My Friend a Valentine"
. Children sit in a circle while one child carries a valentine around the outside of the circle, then stops to place the valentine behind a friend. That friend then becomes the carrier.

Red Tag
Play normal game of tag, but tagger had to tag the child before the child can sit down and name something red.

Balloon volleyball.........blow up red balloon and let children play volleyball.

Balloon relay.......with same red balloons....have kids put balloon between knees and hop to other end of room. If the balloon drops they have to start over from the beginning.

Another Balloon relay....... passing the balloon over under style....this one is funny because the kids forget which way they are supposed to pass the balloon.

Fish For Hearts
Use a previously made fishing pole. Cut out three sizes of hearts, one each from red, pink, and purple paper. Instruct a child to fish for a certain size and color.

BROKEN HEARTS
Give each child a half of a heart that is cut in two... have them find their match... use for a buddy project... or they can find their other half that is hidden around the room. Can do the smaller version of that with Capitol letters on one half and lower case on the other... depending on ages.

Circle Time Heart Match Game
Make a valentine for half the number of children in the group. Cut each heart in half in a zig-zag or swirly fashion, so that each cut is fairly unique and identifiable. Each child is given part of a heart and must find his/her partner by matching the valentine halves.

HEART RELAY
Set up two teams. First person in each team runs up to a pile of hearts which have an action written on each of them. (Hop, jump, clap, etc) Do that action back to the next person on your team in line.

Flying Hearts
Glue a red and a pink heart together back to back. Put this special heart plus about three dozen plain paper hearts in the center of an old bed sheet. The children hold onto all the sides of the sheet and gently toss the hearts up and down. At the shout of "Hearts High!" the children toss the sheet high into the air, making the hearts fly. The child who picks up the most hearts and the one who finds the special pink-and-red heart are the winners.

Musical Hearts
Like musical chairs, in this game, children dance around & listen for the music to stop. When the music stops, children must stand on the large heart-shaped piece of paper on the floor. The fun begins as one heart shape is removed each time the music starts again. Now children must share heart shapes when the music stops at the end, all the children are hugging each other to stay on the last heart shape!

Postman, Postman
Everyone get to participate in this game involving a hidden valentine. Choose one child to be the postman and give him or her the postman's hat. (Red Strip of paper with pink heart that says Postman.) The postman must hides his eyes while you give another child a valentine to hide. Then the postman uncovers his eyes and faces his classmates who say, "Postman, Postman, where's the mail?" The postman gets three guesses to find out who is hiding the mail. If he guesses correctly, he continues as postman. If he is unsuccessful, the person with the mail becomes the postman.

Valentine Mail Vest
Materials: brown grocery bag, scissors, glue, red poster paint, pencil, white tissue.
1. Cut a brown paper bag along the seam. Then cut the bottom out so that you have a long strip of brown paper. Fold the strip in half and cut a neck hole at the fold and a 4-inch slit down the back. The bag should now fit over your head like a vest, with half the bag in front of you and half in back of you.
2. Fold the two front, bottom corners of the bag up and in to form the bottom point of a heart. Glue them together. This will form the pocket for your valentine mail. Sketch the top part of the heart on the vest. Then paint the entire heart red.
3. When the paint has dried, outline the heart with white glue and stick bits of shredded tissue around it to look like lace. You can use glue and shredded tissue to write your name on the front of the heart if you wish.

Valentine's Day Candy Bouquet"
by Brandie Valenzuela

If you are looking for a cute Valentine's Day gift to make for someone you love, consider making them a Valentine's Day Candy Bouquet! With just the right candies and poem, you have something that is sure to make him or her smile!

Materials:
Large terra cotta pot
Paints (pink, red, white, etc.)
Floral foam
Floral picks or wooden shish-kabob skewers
Candy: Sugar Baby, Snickers Bar, Bit-O-Honey, Good and Plenty, 5th Avenue, Pay Day, Mounds, Almond Joy, Hugs and Kisses, Now and Later, GooGoo Cluster, Carefree chewing gum and a 100 Grand Bar.
Optional: Artificial flowers, baby breath, Valentines fabric, potting soil, excelsior, etc.

Paint pot in cute Valentine's Day colors. Let dry. Place floral foam inside of the base of the pot. Either tape or insert the skewers into the candy. Arrange skewered candies in the pot, with the candy sticking up much like flowers in a pot. Arrange artificial flowers and/or baby's breath around the candy. If you wish, you can also arrange some cute Valentine's Day fabric on top of the floral foam or cover with potting soil or excelsior.

Attach the following poem to the arrangement:
My Dearest Sugar Baby,
Happy Valentine's Day! May this bouquet bring you a Snicker as you read my message. You are my Bit-O-Honey, you are worth more than a 100 Grand to me, I get Goo Goo eyes every time I see you. There are more stars in my eyes for you than in the Milky Way. Our Good-N-Plenty life together is like shopping on 5th Avenue on Pay Day. I know I can be Carefree with you. As you know, I love you Now and Later and I wish you Mounds of Almond Joy on this Valentine's Day.

Hugs and Kisses,

Valentine Day Mobile
You will need:
* Red, white, pink and/or purple construction paper
* White glue
* Length of string, ribbon, or yarn
* Scissors
The easiest way to make symmetrical hearts is to fold the construction paper in half. You will need to cut out AT LEAST the following:
* 2 very large hearts
* 2 large hearts
* 2 medium hearts
* 2 small hearts
However, there are many ways to combine the hearts for whatever look you like. You may want to cut out a variety of sizes and glue them together for a layered look. At the very minimum though, take each of the heart pairs and glue them back to back with the string/yarn in between. Leave a space between each pair on the string/yarn. Then you can decorate each pair of hearts any way you like. Glue on several layers of many different size hearts. Decorate with bits of ribbon or candy hearts. Hang from the ceiling or on a wall. If you want to give this to mom as a gift, wrap a few candy kisses in plastic wrap and tie them to the bottom of the string/yarn.

Potato Print Valentines...
Cut a potato in half and cut a heart shape on one end of the cut ends. Paint the heart shape red and press it onto white paper. Allow the children to make any pictures they wish.

Valentine Fish...
Each child will need one very large heart, one large heart, three middle sized hearts, and one little one. The very large heart becomes the body. The large heart becomes the tail. The middle sized hearts become the fins on top of the very large heart. Last the little heart becomes the lips of the fish.

Vinegar Hearts...
Pour white vinegar into small bowls. Set out brushes, pieces of white construction paper and small heart shapes from red tissue paper. Let the children brush vinegar on their papers. Then let them cover their papers with hearts. As it dries, the hearts will fall off leaving red heart prints.

Translucent Hearts...
Cut a large heart shape for each child out of waxed paper. Pour vegetable oil into shallow containers and set out cotton balls. Let the children tear red tissue paper into small pieces. Have the dip the cotton balls into the oil and brush it over their waxed paper hearts. Then let them press the red tissue pieces all over their hearts until the shapes are covered. The oil will help the tissue pieces stick to the hearts while making the red color translucent.

Clay Dough Necklace...
Mix a batch of clay dough. Children can shape their dough using cookie cutters. Bake the clay at 225 degrees for 2 hours, rotating during and after baking them. You can shellac the hearts when they are done.

Corn Syrup Hearts...
Cut two large hearts out of waxed paper for each child. Make corn syrup paint by mixing food coloring into corn syrup. Give the children OLD paintbrushes (this is very sticky) and have them paint one of the hearts. When they are done painting, have them put the other heart on top of the painted heart. Let dry for a couple of days and then hang in the window.

3-D Hearts
Have the children cut three hearts the same size and fold them in half. Glue the hearts together and decorate them with glitter. Use a hole punch to put a hole in the top and hang around the room.

I Love Book
Prepare a heart shaped book with four or five pages inside. The children can draw pictures of people and things they love.

Sponge Paintingv
Cut sponges into heart shapes, use red, pink and white paint to create a valentine's picture.

Lacing Hearts
Cut a heart shape and use a hole punch to put holes around the heart. Attach a string or red wool for the children to lace.

Cutting Hearts
Trace hearts on paper of different sizes. Let the children practice their cutting skills. Older children will love cutting folded hearts without your line to follow. Collage with the hearts.

Valentine Holder
Cut a paper plate into a heart shape. Use the bottom half of a second paper plate to make a pocket. Decorate with valentine stickers or markers.

Graphing Colored Hearts
Prepare a graph with numbers along the bottom. The children will use stickers or heart shapes to complete the graph.

Stuffed Heart
This activity is for four and five year olds, however they will still need one on one attention during the sewing. Cut two felt hearts. Using white or pink wool start to sew around the edges. Before sewing all the way around stuff the heart, then complete sewing.

Heart Necklace
Make a heart shaped pendant using dough and a cookie cutter. Use a straw to put a hole in the top for stringing later. Bake or let set until hard and paint. You may want to apply two coats of paint and then some Podgy to make it shiny. String onto a piece of red wool long enough for a necklace.

String Painting
Cut a heart shape and fold it in half. Open the fold and use valentine colors to string paint. When the painting is complete fold the heart in half and press together, then open up to see the beautiful designs. TIP: I like to attach strings to clothes pins for easier handling.

Pop up Valentine Card
Cut two card sized pieces of construction paper, one white and one red. The white piece will be the outside of the card. On the front print "On this Valentine's Day". Add a cupid or heart shape to the front of the card. Fold the red piece in half and trace a heart shape. This will be on the fold of the card. Cut the heart shape almost all the way around to the bottom. Glue the red and white pieces together except on the heart part. On the inside of the card print "My heart goes out to you" When you open the card the heart will pop out.

Valentine Envelop
(submitted by Amy) Use a non-frosted pop-tart and let the children spread their own white icing on top. Next allow the children to find and place letters of their own names on top of the pop-tart by using Alpha-bits cereal. The last step is to place a Valentine heart candy on the top right corner of the pop-tart. The end result should resemble an envelope!

Valentine Tree
Stick a small, bare branch into a flower fop weighted with sand, pebbles, or play dough. Trim the tree with tiny hearts the children have cut out and decorated and hang them on strings or threads.

Finger painting
Make a red finger painting. After it is dry cut it into a heart shape and paste it to black construction paper.

Stained Glass Heart
Have the children grate pink, red, and white crayons onto waxed paper. Adult presses waxed paper with warm iron to melt crayon shavings. Allow to cool. Cut out a heat shape from the center of construction paper. Attach the waxed paper behind the heart shaped hole. Or, cut the waxed paper in the shape of a heart, punch a hole in top, put string through hole and hang as a mobile.

Tissue Paper Heart
Have children cut heart from construction paper. Crumple small squares of red and pink tissue paper and glue to heart. Or draw large heart on poster board and have the children do the same.

Potato Prints
Cut a potato in half. Carve a heart shape out of each end. Dip in red paint and print on white paper.

Sparkle Paint
Cut out a jumbo heart from easel paper. Mix kosher salt into red, white and pink paint. Paint heart.

Valentine Marble Painting
Use a heart candy box bottom, cut paper to fit inside the box, dip marbles into pink and red paint. Drop marble into the box and let the child twist and turn the box. Add snowflake glitter. They are really beautiful. And the kids love to do it.

Valentine Day postcard!
Cut out red construction paper in the size of a standard postcard. Allow the kids to decorate one side using crayons, paints, and pre- cut hearts in white, pink and red. One the back of the construction paper glue a plain piece on white paper. Draw a line down the middle with a heart felt verse on the left side and the address of who you would like to send it to. Stick a stamp on and toss it in the mail! I have a daycare in my home and we sent one to all of the parents at their place of work. The parents loved it, even the Dads!! Great for Grandparents and Auntie's and Uncle's too!

”I love you to pieces” picture frame
Materials needed:
Picture of each child
Picture frame puzzle pieces
Elmer's glue
Foam letters to spell “I Love You To Pieces”

I took pictures and developed them prior to making this project first the children glued puzzle pieces on to the picture frame they then glued on the foam pieces saying I love you to pieces, after drying we placed our photos in, wrapped them in tissue paper tied them up with a ribbon and gave them to the parents as valentines gifts It was a great hit.

Valentine Bulletin Board Theme
Make a pattern of a chocolate kiss candy and wrap w/ tinfoil. Make enough for every child. Take white tissue paper and write the child's name on it and glue on the kiss. You or the children can cut out small hearts of pink, white and/or red to put around the kisses. Title: ________(Teacher's name) Favorite Sweets.

Have each child dictate his/her favorite recipe and copy in the exact words used. Include ingredients used, steps to make it, temperature to cook it on, how long, etc. Then have each child illustrate how to make the food and what the finished product looks like. Reproduce enough for each child in the class and make a cover with "Recipes From Our Hearts" written around a heart. Have each child sign his/her name on the heart and also on the recipe. This make a great Valentine or Mother's Day gift.

Don't "Hog" All the Hugs, There Are Plenty For Everyone! Have your children paint both a large and small paper plate pink. After the plates are dry, glue the plates together with a little bit overlapping. Give the children 1/4 piece of pink paper and 1/2 piece black paper. Tell them to cut 2 triangles and a circle out of the pink paper. This will be the ears and the nose of the pigs. Have them fold their black paper in half and then half again and cut a "W" shape. When they have cut that they will have four pig feet. Then have them cut two small black circles for the nose. Glue on wiggly eyes and draw a mouth. Give them 1/2 of a pink pipe cleaner and show them how to curl it around a pencil. Tape it on as the tail. Have your children make heart valentines to place around the pigs for a really cute Valentine bulletin board!

Heartful Helpers,
(good parent/child project). I sent a letter home asking my children to have a heart and be helpers. I gave each of my children 10 cut-out hearts to take home. Each time they helped out around the house, with chores, with pets, or siblings, they got to bring a heart back to school. They had to write their accomplishment on the heart. Then at school, I will display their hearts on the wall to create a huge heart. At the end of the month, if they were hearty helpers, I told them we would have a heartfelt party.

Valentine's Day Card
Prepare a big red heart with a smaller heart in the middle of it with "I Love You" written on the smaller heart. Have children sit in a chair and hold the heart in front of them. Take an individual close-up picture of each child. Then have the children make the following card.
Materials:
Red construction paper
White construction paper or white doily
Glue Poem (from below)
Directions: Fold red construction paper in half. Cut out a white heart or use a white doily and glue on the front of the card. Then glue the following poem on the front of the card.

You'd never guess this darling heart was once a boring brown paper grocery bag! Make one yourself to give to a friend or to hang in your entryway.

You will need:
brown grocery bag
acrylic paint in red and pink
toothbrush
paintbrush
fine tip black marker
pinking shears (or other decorative scissors)
small material scrap in gingham or other pattern of your choice
heart shaped buttons, small pink, medium red
cotton batting (Fiberfil)
white craft glue (Tacky glue)
craft wire
pencil
raffia
hot glue gun

What you do:
Lay brown paper bag on flat work surface. Cut out two large sections from the front and back of the bag. Stack those sections, one on top of the other, then fold them in half. Draw half a heart, with the fold being in the middle of the heart, then cut it out with the pinking shears.

Beginning at the bottom of the heart, use tacky glue to connect the two layers at the seams, stuffing the heart as you go with cotton batting (Fiberfil). Work your way around the edges, carefully stuffing (but not too much!) until heart is completely closed.

When the glue is dry, paint the heart red, leaving the decorative edges plain as seen in the photo. When the red paint is dry, dip the bristle tips of a toothbrush into the pink paint. Test your flecking ability on a piece of scrap paper before doing this on your heart. Hold toothbrush horizontally and drag your thumb across the bristles, causing the paint to fleck spots wherever you aim it. When you are comfortable with this method, go ahead and fleck some pink paint on your heart.

When pink paint is dry, use the black finetip marker to write BE MINE, placing decorative dots at the point of each letter. Use pinking shears to cut out a small heart from the gingham scrap material. Use white glue to adhere the material heart to the upper right hand corner of your brown bag heart. Use white glue to adhere a small pink heart shaped button to the material scrap.

Cut a piece of craft wire long enough to wrap completely around your heart. This should be enough for your hanger. Find the middle of craft wire, wrap the middle section of the wire around a pencil about 6 or 7 times. Pull the pencil out to create the curl at the top of your hanger. Curve the wire into a hanger shape and poke each end carefully through the sides of the heart as shown in the photo. Use the skinny end of a small paintbrush to curl the ends of the wire that you poked through.

Using raffia, tie a bow out onto the craft wire just before where the top curls begin. Using a hot glue gun, glue the medium sized red heart shaped button to the center of the raffia. Spray the entire heart with a coat of acrylic sealant.

Note: It is not necessary to paint the back of the heart, though you may if you like.

Shaker Cards
Supplies:
Craft Board - 1/8 - 1/4 inch thick lightweight foam with cardstock-type
cover on both sides.
Card Stock
Clear, Heavy Plastic
Glue
Crayons or Markers
Misc. Craft Supplies Begin by cutting the craft board with an exacto knife to about 3 x 6 inch, or whatever size you want. Then get some plain card stock and cut 2 pieces the same size as the board. With the knife, cut out a heart, about 2x 2, in the center of one piece, laid it on top of the board and marked the heart, then cut it out of the board. Get a piece of clear plastic, like from a sheet protector, and cut a piece big enough to cover the cut-out with enough border for glue. Now it is ready for the kids. You should have a piece of cardstock, plain; one piece of cardstock with acut-out; one piece of clear plastic; and one piece of board with a cut-out for each child. Let the kids decorate the 2 pieces of cardstock with crayons, markers, stickers, lace, ribbon - whatever you have. When they are done, glue the plastic to the wrong side of the cardstock with the cut-out, then glue the 2 cut-out pieces together, lining up the cut-outs. Put a small handfull of metallic confetti - this one had multi-colored hearts - or anything else you might think of in the "window". Glue the back piece on to seal it in, and trim the edges if needed.

Picture Card
Supplies:
Construction Paper

Paper Doily
Pen , Pencil, or Crayon Take your construction paper, try not to fold and cut it into a heart shape, take a polaroid picture or a 1 hour photo shot of each child, take a paper lace doily and glue the picture to the doily with the lace around the picture, have the child write a cute verse, or you can write it and let them sign their name. Here are a few verses, or make up your own!

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I made this

Heart Puzzles
Supplies:
Scissors

Various Sizes of Paper Hearts Cut hearts in half leaving a zig-zagged edge. Number both sides of the heart with the same number or letter. Let children match heart halves

Valentines Day Placemats
Gather up old Valentines cards, cut out the pictures and glue them onto red construction paper in a collage fashion. Cover placemat with clear contact paper. Another idea is to use fewer cards and stamp heart shapes in between the cards. To do this: Cut a potato in a half and carve a heart shape out of the potato. Dip the cut side of the potato into red paint and stamp the placemats with the hearts.

I found this in a Women's Day Magazine 2/15/00. This was written by Hellen Moore of San Diego, Ca.

You may not get boxes of candy
from movie stars, that's true.
But here's a spoonful of kisses
from a caring friend for you!
Happy Valentine's Day.

She put Hershey Kisses in plastic spoons, wrapped them in plastic and used red ribbon to secure them to door knobs of her single friends. She was a recent widow and this helped her cope with her own sense of loss and brightened her day to see how grateful her friends were.
