HELPING CHILDREN DEVELOP A POSITIVE SELF IMAGE

  • Say something positive to a child each day.
  • Try to see that each child achieves success in some way each day.
  • Give children recognition for the efforts they make, even though it may not come up to expectations.
  • Make every child feel that they belong.
  • Lisen to children and look them in the eye when they are talking.
  • Answer children's questions openly, honestly, and immediately if possible.
  • Do not embarrass children, especially in front of others; do not make them question their worth.
  • Encourage children to be proud of their name, ideas, and work.
  • Do not set goals so high that the chance of failure prevents children from trying.
  • Help children gain acceptance by their peers.
  • Promote an atmosphere in which everyone expects some mistakes to occur and are tolerant of them. View a mistake as an opportunity to learn something new.
  • Use the child's name when speaking to them.
  • Emphasize what children do right, instead of what they do wrong.
  • Treat children as you would be treated.
