HELPING CHILDREN DEVELOP A POSITIVE SELF IMAGE
-
Say something positive to a child each day.
- Try to see that each child achieves success in some way each day.
- Give children recognition for the efforts they make, even though it may
not come up to expectations.
- Make every child feel that they belong.
- Lisen to children and look them in the eye when they are talking.
- Answer children's questions openly, honestly, and immediately if
possible.
- Do not embarrass children, especially in front of others; do not make
them question
their worth.
- Encourage children to be proud of their name, ideas, and work.
- Do not set goals so high that the chance of failure prevents children
from trying.
- Help children gain acceptance by their peers.
- Promote an atmosphere in which everyone expects some mistakes to occur
and
are tolerant of them. View a mistake as an opportunity to learn
something new.
- Use the child's name when speaking to them.
- Emphasize what children do right, instead of what they do wrong.
- Treat children as you would be treated.
